Angelina Jolie Discusses the Transformative Experience of Portraying Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín's "Maria"

Recently, Angelina Jolie revealed details about her most recent performance as the famous but troubled opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larraín's upcoming movie "Maria." Before arriving at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles, the movie had its premieres at a number of esteemed film festivals, including Venice, Telluride, and New York.
In this film, Larraín, who is renowned for his reflective biopics such as "Jackie" and "Spencer," explores Maria Callas's final years in Paris in the 1970s. Her battle to recover her renowned operatic voice is the main emphasis of the story. During a post-filming conversation hosted by Barry Jenkins, Larraín stressed that Jolie was the only option that could capture Callas' dramatic flare and be disciplined enough to sing opera.
Jolie acknowledged that at first, she didn't realize how difficult opera was. "I agreed to sing, thinking it would be like acting through song, not fully grasping the demands of opera singing," she stated. Her artistic boundaries were pushed during the lengthy seven-month vocal training, which became a very emotional trip.As she reflected on the part, Jolie said it forced her to go into previously unexplored areas of her profession. "This role was a rare opportunity to be completely vulnerable and to rediscover my own voice," she said. "Under Pablo's direction, I found a safe space to explore and fail, which was liberating as an artist."
Jolie stated on the red carpet that she does not consider herself a singer, even though she has perfected Callas' voice and character. She did, however, feel that she had rediscovering her voice in this part. Jolie has been affected for a long time by her intense involvement in Callas' life, which has made Callas feel like a sister to her.
Netflix will begin streaming "Maria" on December 11 and it will be available in select theaters on November 27.
